SEVERAL months ago your newspaper ran an article about certain conservative members of our council who had objected about the sale of a piece of land on Broadway in Davyhulme and subsequently were removed from their positions on certain committee's for daring to ask why/or voting against the sale of this land to a private concern at almost half it's market value This piece of land was sold so that a new surgery could be built in place of the Canterbury road surgery that is too small for the number of patients it has, and that another reason for such a low sale cost was that the NHS in Trafford was struggling with it's debts and this would help them and at the same time serve the community.
I approached my local councillor and told him that I thought it was out of order for this land to be sold on the cheap (for want of a better word) and that as tax payers we already funded the NHS and they should find the cash elsewhere and not let the ratepayers pick up the tab.
I also informed my councillor that Trafford NHS would not think twice about reducing services within our borough. Well my predictions are coming true, Trafford General is talking about laying off staff, reducing services and even outsourcing other services such as breast screening (now being moved to Wythenshaw), the childrens ward, and maternity moving into the middle of Manchester.
So I would like to thank those members of our conservative council who helped Trafford NHS make a quick killing (pardon the pun) at our expense and then put the boot in by reducing what was once a fine hospital (the very first in the NHS) into little more than a drop in day care centre, or a care home for the elderly. With the advanced closure of Altrincham we will soon have no hospitals at all in Trafford.
Eddie Ashton.
