TRAFFORD Council is struggling to accept that, if it closes the George Carnall Leisure Centre, the displaced people will not fit into the much smaller Urmston Leisure Centre.

It is the perfect definition of striving to get a quart into a pint pot!

Urmston’s miniscule car park is normally just about full whereas, at George Carnall, there are often thirty cars at any time of the day.

How can an additional thirty cars fit into an already-full car park?

At George Carnall the sports hall is always full with people on fully-booked yoga, body conditioning and Pilates classes so how are those hugely popular classes going to fit into Urmston's limited availability?

It won’t happen and the people who lose out will be those living near George Carnall.

If George Carnall closes the totality of public squash courts in Trafford reduces to just one.

It should also be mentioned that, while George Carnall is on several bus routes for those without cars, Urmston is not - so many elderly people would need to walk at least a mile just to get to Urmston’s facility.

As George Carnall has ample space for expansion, and perhaps the building of a pool, the sensible option would be to expand George Carnall and close Urmston.

Will the Council have a change of heart? Not a chance . . . but with Urmston literally being too small it is a disaster waiting to happen.
