URMSTON in the 1950s was a magical era when crime as we know it today was in its infancy.

Breaking up for the school holidays was the highlight of the year for many children but, with no computer games in those days, children were left to their own devices.

Saturday afternoons saw half the kids from Urmston drawn like a magnet to the Empress cinema on Higher Road which featured the children's matinee. Any kid giving cheek in those days, especially to the local bobby on the beat, would end up getting a cuff around the earhole. You might not like it but it taught you respect for others.

With the beautiful warm sunshine and outdoor activities, returning to school after the summer holidays you were as brown as berries.

Even though we didn't realise it at the time, those days were probably the best days of our lives.
