I read Elizabeth Andrew’s letter criticising how our excellent and compassionate MP had voted regarding the issue on refugees (Bemused by Vote, November 3).

Unlike Ms Andrews, I have served as a deputy CEO and head of fundraising of a major Christian overseas aid charity and am aware that the UK gives more per head of population in cash, food and aid than any other nation in the world.

The UK also gives huge amounts to the UN and via the Commonwealth to help third world nations, as well as to Brussels and we are the leader in supporting trade rather than just aid.

Our soldiers serve in dozens of nations, restoring and preserving freedom. The UK never signed up to Schengen and therefore refugees who arrive in the EU are the responsibility of the EU that plays a pitiful role in world affairs.

I am compassionate but believe that at times we need to understand “charity begins at home” and that we should deal with the challenges in our poorer back yard first.
