Seeing the letter in the Messenger on September 22 (School Appeal) about Stretford High School started me on a rollercoaster into the past.
I was there from 1937 to 1943.
After 1941, when the ‘mansionhouse’ was razed to the ground by a land-mine, we spent our time after the evacuation at the Taylor Road Junior School, the Boys’ Grammar School and the Tech.
Things like the names of about a dozen teachers spring to mind and the head girl.
Most of my school friends are looking at me from above now but it is nice to be reminded of the olden days. I have just thought of ‘reports’ (for being naughty) and ‘order marks’ (for being seriously wicked), which have never crossed my mind for seventy odd years.
Were the yearly speech competitions kept on? I was in those every year.
And the hockey and netball tournaments between schools?
Happy Days!
