The original building housing the Stretford High School for Girls was bombed in 1941.   The boys Grammar school and the Technical school continued unscathed by the war.   A new girls’ high school was built in 1953.

There seems to be no record of life in the Girls High in the difficult 40's when, as I recollect, we were housed in old junior school buildings, plus various temporary classrooms in the playground.

Unfortunately I can't recall the address.  Maybe near a Taylor's Road, quite near a small park, or green space?  The boys’ grammar school and the tech were within walking distance - we went to the tech for our domestic science lessons, full of wonder at the facilities, and the fact that pupils learned Spanish, and typing and shorthand!

I was a pupil at the Girls’ High between 1944 and 1952.  I have recently returned to Manchester, a bit dismayed to find that bit of history in education has disappeared.

In the 60's, I'm told, the old Boys’ Grammar became co-ed, still selected by entry exam, and the Girls’ High became the current non-selected co-ed school.

I would be interested to know if anyone is still around with information, or memories of Stretford High School for Girls in the period between 1940 and 1953.
