LONELINESS hurts. It can literally take your breath away, making it hard to function. And it can kill.

Millions of people feel the debilitating effects of loneliness every day. I know. I've been one of them.

So, I welcome the news that 'Safe and Well' visits will be undertaken by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in Timperley. (Messenger News, June 27)

Identifying people who are at risk of social isolation is a step in the right direction but we need to make sure they don't get lost in the system. And we need to make sure they get the support and companionship they need.

Nearly a quarter of people over 75 who live alone do not see or speak with someone every day. Can you imagine what it's like to only have the radio for company, with no-one to share your day with?

We think it's time to up the ante in the fight against loneliness. We've launched a service in Sale, Altrincham and Hale to help older people to continue to enjoy happy and meaningful lives.

This means still being able to meet up with friends and doing what they love. Or it could be as simple as having someone to share a cup of tea or a meal with.

Our plan is to end loneliness in this country. Help us spread the word.
