TRAFFORD Council's Highways Department seems to move in mysterious ways.

We now have the area outside the Altrincham Interchange being dug up yet again. Also,to help impede the flow of traffic, an area of pavement near the Moss Lane junction is also under reconstruction.

Not content with this, part of Lloyd Street pavement is being excavated.

Meantime, a new tip has been created on the corner of Denmark Street/Lloyd Street.

While all this is happening, essential work is neglected: the blocked drain at the entrance to the car park under Total Fitness is untouched, thereby creating an artificial lake: is this part of the Altrincham. Another is being created at the top of Oxford Road.

Fortunately there, the water can escape down the many cracks and potholes in the road, which have been untouched for many years.

Considering that Oxford Road is used as a high speed short cut to avoid Ashley Road, one would have thought that at least it could be kept in good repair, so that the council is not sued by a motorist for damage while hitting a pothole at speed.

It seems that necessary work cannot be financed, yet money can be found to carry out work which might not have been necessary with a small amount of forward thinking.

Never mind, there seems to be plenty of funds available to plaster over brick, and paint it white, so that all the empty shops are at least bright and attractive, and the council can say to themselves 'What a great job we are doing for Altrincham'!
