THE recent death of Muhammad Ali brought back great childhood memories of watching boxing matches with my Dad, Councillor Whit Stennett for the Clifford Ward.

Our family were massive fans of Ali and it was always a family tradition to gather around the television to watch his pre-match banter and cheer him on as he knocked out his opponents.

We also enjoyed watching him when he appeared on the Michael Parkinson show.

In October 1971, when we heard that Ali was due to visit Stretford Arndale to promote the Ovaltine drink, I cried and pleaded with my Dad to take me along.

I was only four years old but I was desperate to meet my hero and role model. I can honestly say that it was one of the best days of my life.

There were hundreds of people but I had a great view of 'the Greatest' as I was sat on my Dad's shoulders.

There was a huge amount of pushing and shoving on the day but Ali took hold of my hand.

Despite the crowds we managed to purchase a signed tin of Ovaltine which we still have to this day!
