AMID justified criticisms of negative campaigning in the EU Referendum, I'd like to make clear I'll be voting remain not out of fear, but out of principle.

Not a single one of the large problems facing the world - climate, resources, refugees, wars - can be solved at a national level.

If there is to be any sort of half-decent future for our children and grand children, countries must come together to find common solutions through compromise.

For all its faults, and yes, there are many, the European Union is the world's leading example of this.

Let's not cower from our responsibilities on the sidelines, but believe in our ability to influence for good in the heart of the debate.

So much we owe the young.

Those believing that retreat from Europe would be somehow patriotic are deeply misguided. With 76 per cent of Scots favouring remain, Brexit would bring unstoppable calls for a second referendum on Scottish independence, after which Great Britain itself would cease to exist.
