We are sorry that we led Simon Jones to believe that the main purpose of our letter (Messenger May 12) was to use a statistical exercise to show that 80 per cent of Sale Moor residents don't care whether a supermarket is built on a Sale Moor car park or not.

Perhaps only using the word 'seem' conveyed the impression that the residents did not care at all. Perhaps we should have said '80 per cent of the local people don't seem to care enough one way or the other' then possibly Simon may have allowed us what we admit is just our assumption.

Obviously we do not really know why anyone does not respond, or indeed does respond, to a survey but really that does not matter particularly.

The main point of the letter was to point out that it would appear that the Warrener Street car park is going to be developed, if what Councillor Anstee is reported to have said is correct.

We believe that the people that did respond to the survey and were opposed to the supermarket may not have been aware that the site would be developed anyway.

If not a supermarket then of course the development could be anything but we think that the obvious choice would be housing or office development.

We have been informed - by Trafford Council - that there are 90 parking places at the current car park, sorry Simon we have not actually counted them ourselves.

We understand that the proposed supermarket would provide 90 parking places - albeit with some controls.

Our letter was to express our opinion that many of those who originally opposed the development would in fact choose a supermarket with 90 free parking places for the public over another form of development without any public parking facility.
