On a Monday morning, passing through the alleyway from Oxford Road to Sainsbury's, I was surprised to see a man, with a broom and rubbish bag, sweeping up the debris of wrappers, cigarette ends, leaves and take-away boxes, which accumulates there constantly.

It seems that the man was employed neither by Trafford Council nor Sainsbury's but was just public spirited, and fed up with the area never being cleaned.

Sainsbury's had done nothing presumably as it thought it was the council's job and the council had done nothing as it regarded it as part of Sainsbury's area and not the council's responsibility; meanwhile the rubbish had accumulated.

The alleyway and the adjacent area at the end of Rigby Street are never cleaned. They must supply an image to visitors that despite re-laying pavements that did not need re-laying and roads that did not need re-surfacing.

The council has no money for cleaning streets and re-surfacing roads full of cracks and pot-holes and pavements that are broken and kerbstones that are unaligned.

The fact is that the council turns a blind eye to these problems because they are not on the main route through the centre of Altrincham. As soon as anyone deviated from the main road, they would see what a sorry state the rest of the town is in.
