I wonder how many of your readers are aware of the campaign to reopen Middlewich railway station?
This might not seem particularly relevant to our area, apart from enabling more commuters into Manchester to avoid travelling by car.
However, it would be especially useful for south Trafford residents, as it would restore a direct train service from Altrincham to Crewe, providing connections to London, the south-west and Wales without having to start off with a 'wrong-way' trip to Manchester or Stockport. The journey time would be little more than half an hour.
Reintroducing passenger services to the line, which runs from Northwich to Sandbach, has already had a very positive feasibility study conducted by Cheshire East Council. Because freight trains have continued to use the route, the cost is only £3m – a tiny fraction of what is being devoted to projects with fancy catchphrases such as 'Northern Powerhouse'.
There is already support for the project from local politicians and MPs along the line's route in Cheshire. Any Trafford residents supportive of the campaign should contact their local MP and other representatives, asking for their help in persuading the Department for Transport and local councils to fund this simple but very worthwhile improvement to our rail network.
