On reading the article ‘Parents outraged as disabled students at Brentwood School have Transport axed’ (Messenger October 1) I am left wondering who, if anyone, really cares anymore.

Of course these parents have every right to be outraged and they are most deserving of our universal support in their complaints against Trafford Council.

That said let us not forget the policy being implemented by hard pressed council officers instructed to save every penny they can, is the policy of Trafford Tories who control the council and have very eagerly these past six years implemented every austerity measure going, to the extent the council now hides behind such flimsy statements as ‘we are discharging our statutory duty.’

Of the current 16 plus cohort attending Brentwood School, 55 per cent of them still receive transport to the school so I think we really need to know how much is being saved.

This also needs to be balanced carefully against the benefits of providing transport to these children and their families, especially where in some cases this was the only support a family was receiving which enabled them to maintain a life work balance.

We hear much from Trafford Tories about the fantastic selective education system we have in Trafford and the aspiration it encourages.

I would like to remind Cllr Anstee, the leader of the council, that our special needs children and their parents have aspirations too and you ignore them at your peril.

Cutting transport to save money or because it is no longer a statutory duty is easy to implement but I am left wondering if Cllr Anstee has ever considered the long term damage it may do or for that matter even cares.
