‘A love letter to Altrincham’

Altrincham is full of people who are doing good. I have a friend who made a beautiful quilt to auction for Christies and others knit teddies for children in refugee camps. My neighbour puts in light bulbs too high for me to reach. Others run the charity shops out of Altrincham. We have the most lucrative NHS trust in the North West and people man the wonderful family counselling service based in Stamford Park.

There is just so much good being done by the people of Altrincham but they are being misled.

Altrincham has one of the highest levels of available disposable income in the country but the council operates as though it has access to the riches of a back of beyond township in a third world country.

It betrays our ancestors by treating the poor as though they are all conniving and not to be trusted. I know some are but I have met overwhelming kindness from ordinary people.

My carers are a delight and a joy and I thank God for them, however, they used to be able to park with a sign that showed their schedule and now the council doesn’t trust them to do that.

I know one lady who paid the fine herself as it was difficult for her to persuade the council to not fine her. It is misplaced financial servicing. A perfect example is Oxford Road. The sewers collapsed and the surface covered over and now everyone who drives down there has their suspension ruined.

The mobile library service, which I used, won a national prize and it was immediately cut by the council. I went to a meeting to discuss the needs for the library and everybody said they needed a good book stock – they gave us a computer instead and said that was what we asked for.

When libraries were first established an MP said in a democracy we must educate our voters; I fear when libraries are closed or robbed of money we are being misled.  Trust the people, they are good and they know the reality.
