I WRITE to respond to John Weightman’s letter of July 16, ‘Don’t Give in to Rude Cyclists’.
Mr Weightman’s point that ‘there has to be some give and take’ is key.
Certainly people on bikes must give way to pedestrians and treat them with respect, but equally walkers should be aware that this is a shared path so bikes are likely to regularly overtake them, and will need space to do so.
Bridgewater Way has been a fantastic success as it has helped hundreds more commuters and children choose healthy transport options to work and school. In the long term this is good for the environment and reduces traffic problems.
Of course these new behaviour changes come with challenges and we want to work with all the communities who use the path to tackle them.
Trafford Council and Bridgewater Canal Trust now manage the path but Sustrans is keen to work with local people and partners to help overcome any problems with shared space. We all want to create a greener, healthier Manchester but we have to work together to achieve that.
