I RECENTLY met an elderly man and his delightful little dog outside a local supermarket – we got talking and he told me how he was keeping his dog cool during the heatwave.

It was obvious to me that this little dog had brought so much happiness into his life, he was so happy to care for her.

What surprised me was that several people where he lives, had complained about his dog and he could not understand why. They actually wanted him to lose this little dog which had brought so much happiness into his life. He treasures her, that was obvious to me.

I have had many dogs in my life and I could tell immediately that this little bundle of fur could never be a threat to anyone – she was so placid and friendly. Had she been an aggressive breed there might have been some reason but she is not.

Fortunately for this elderly man, someone who presumably manages the accommodation he is in made a phone call and he was allowed to keep his dog.

The isolation of the elderly can be often forgotten – we live such busy lives – its how we feel that matters at the end of the day and this elderly man can now remain happy thanks to the kind soul who gave him permission to keep his dog.
