IN the Messenger, May 28, there was an article concerning the dispute between Sean Anstee and Jane Baugh, as to where cuts should be made to cover the £220K shortfall in money.

What makes me curious is why, when the council is strapped for cash, has the 'landscaping' of Goose Green in Altrincham gone ahead?

Goose Green was, until last month, a pleasant and peaceful area, the only problem being the path between the hospital, and the building which was Barclays Bank, which had been destroyed by the building of the hospital.

Now,we have major works in Goose Green, resulting in the destruction of the tree in the centre, the removal of the surrounding bench, and removal of the Geese.

A rubbish dump has been created on the corner of Lloyd Street and Denmark Street, and the progress is at a snail's pace. Presumably the cost of this project has involved fairly handsome architects' fees, and the cost of machinery hire, and labour costs will not be cheap.

Perhaps, though, the council has managed to get the work done on a voluntary basis, or maybe it is paid for by EU funds for deprived areas? I

If there is some superfluous money for such work, why do the council not use it to provide roads without potholes and level pavements for pedestrians ?
