THE removal of the bridge at Altrincham Interchange evoked childhood memories of my noticing new wood inlaid into the floor of the bridge on the many occasions I crossed it.

On asking my dad, as small boys do, why this was so, I was told that a German plane had damaged the bridge and it had needed repairing.

Ever since I have wondered whether this was just a tale to fire a small boy’s imagination, which it certainly did, or whether it was in fact true.

Can anyone tell me?
