An example of good and evil on the same day

9:06am Thursday 16th May 2013

ON May 10, I was at the checkout in Sainsbury’s, in Sale, with roughly £25 worth of shopping. I was intending to pay on my debit card. The card was refused three times even though I knew there was more than enough to cover the goods. The queue was growing, while I went into ‘meltdown’, stumbling over words, as you can imagine. Someone in the queue said something like ‘my son's card was cloned not so long ago, it could be that’. Then, the loveliest thing happened. The gentleman stood behind me took his card and insisted on paying for my shopping. He didn’t tell me who he was and simply said ‘treat it as an early Christmas present’. I was so shocked at everything that had happened, I simply gave him a hug and walked back to the office. My manager told me go into the bank and sort it out. They told me that an unusual transaction was requested the night before from abroad but was refused and, because they didn’t have my contact telephone number, they couldn’t call me, hence the fraudster lost. The good and the evil in half an hour. I wish I could repay my good Samaritan. Frances Devine, address supplied
