Simon Cowell has teamed up with the company behind the Lego movie to bring animated character Betty Boop back to the big screen.

The film, described as "a music-driven" comedy, is the result of a deal between Cowell's Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic Entertainment.

The Betty Boop character, a 1920s-style flapper with a distinctive curly haircut and high-pitched voice , first appeared on screen in the 1930s and starred in more than 100 cartoons.

Cowell said: " Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world - I'm thrilled to be working with her. Betty, I've worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!"

Zareh Nalbandian, the chief executive of Animal Logic, said: "I' 'm thrilled that Animal Logic is part of this exciting new collaboration with Betty. She's an amazing, iconic and loved character, and we're going to have so much fun producing her 21st century big screen debut."

The firm has worked on films including The Great Gatsby, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Moulin Rouge and Iron Man 3.
