Energy watchdog Ofgem said the move followed around two billion pounds of savings in the sector

Households are set to see £12 a year cut from bills after the energy regulator announced plans to curb the spending of power network operators.

Ofgem said five of the six electricity distribution companies will be allowed to spend £17 billion on upgrading and maintaining Britain's local electricity network over the period between April and 2023.

This represents a saving of £2.1 billion on their previous business plans and will be passed on to consumers through a cut in bills over the eight years.

There are 14 different distribution networks in Britain, with their operations accounting for 8% of an annual dual fuel bill. Today's proposals will now be subject to consultation before a final decision in November.

The price cut will vary according to regions and may be offset by other supply costs. It comes as the UK's major retail energy providers come under pressure to cut their bills after Ofgem said today that a typical large supplier's pre-tax margin for the year to June 2015 rose £5 on a month earlier to £106.

Ofgem chief executive Dermot Nolan said the regulator's intervention over the monopoly network companies will deliver better customer service and efficient investment at a lower cost for the bill payer.

He added: "Today's announcement is all part of Ofgem's consistent drive to get the best deal for consumers while maintaining a stable regulatory regime which attracts investment as cheaply as possible."

Last November, Western Power Distribution was the only company to have its prices agreed early after Ofgem judged its business plan for the eight-year period showed sufficient value for consumers.

Ofgem returned five out of the six companies' plans - UK Power Networks, Northern Power Grid, SP Energy Networks, SSE Power Distribution and Electricity North West - because they failed to deliver value for consumers.

Since then, companies have identified £700 million of savings and Ofgem has ruled out a further £1.4 billion following further analysis.

SSE said it was disappointed with a number of elements within the draft determination, including Ofgem's assumptions about the scope of further cost reductions across the industry.

It said it was already one of the most cost-efficient operators in Britain and said it would review Ofgem's assumptions on how it will be able to operate and develop its distribution networks for customers benefit.

Big Deal, a whole quid a month, I wonder what I can do with that.

That does not cover anywhere near what we have been compelled to pay in charges ever since Thatcher sold OUR power networks to her mates.

What profits that went back into the industry, now go out in profits to private individuals and corporate funds, often to be taken out of the country where both the power stations and distribution network was built at taxpayers expense.

I hope these people who are being forced to give me a one pound a month lose lots of sleep from the worry and shock of the OFGEM decision.

But somehow I doubt it, they'll simply find a new way to screw it back off us.

Shame on OFGEM for it's temerity in failing to deal with this in a proper and robust manner for the real benefit of the customers.
