Honour for 'bomb magnet' soldier

Messenger Newspapers: The Prince of Wales will preside at the investiture The Prince of Wales will preside at the investiture

A soldier said to have escaped serious injury more than 15 times will be awarded the Military Cross by the Prince of Wales today.

Warrant Officer Class 1 Patrick Hyde has been nicknamed "bomb magnet" following his close calls with improvised explosive devices (IED) laid by Afghan insurgents.

The soldier from The Rifles is being recognised for an incident in July last year when despite being injured when an Afghan soldier stepped on an IED, he still helped direct operations and arranged for troops to be removed by helicopter.

Also being recognised during the Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony is veteran stage producer Sir Michael Codron who will be dubbed a knight for services to the theatre.

Sir Michael recognised the talents of Harold Pinter early on and put on his play The Birthday Party when the playwright was virtually unknown.

Matthew Searle, chief executive of the organisation Missing Abroad, set up by the Lucie Blackman Trust, will be awarded an MBE for service to British citizens overseas.
