Tom Hardy has revealed an unlikely inspiration for his character in Lawless - cult cookery show Come Dine With Me.

The Dark Knight Rises star plays a bare-knuckle boxer with a soft heart in the upcoming film, also starring Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce.

When asked by Total Film how he got into character as the Prohibition tough guy, he said: "I watch Come Dine With Me!"

The actor added of the Channel 4 show: "I really do like Come Dine With Me. It's great people-watching. I'll steal characters from Come Dine With Me. Because they're real people. I take something from everybody."

Tom said his Lawless character, Forrest Bondurant, was a matriarch. He continued: "He's a mother. I don't think it's being macho, I don't think that's what masculinity is."

Lawless opens in cinemas on September 7, 2012.
