Andrew Lloyd Webber has defended his decision to cast Chris Moyles as King Herod in his new production of musical Jesus Christ Superstar, insisting he will be "fabulous".

The DJ and self-proclaimed saviour of Radio 1 was unveiled as the surprise casting in the latest adaptation of the musical maestro's hit show, which will also star the winner of his new ITV talent contest in the title role.

Lloyd Webber said: "Chris Moyles will be fabulous. He's a really good singer. He was on Celebrity X Factor if I remember rightly and he was very good. And he'll be a very funny King Herod, which will be terrific."

He revealed he had cast comedian Tim Minchin as Judas after he had told him it was his lifelong ambition to play the role.

Former Spice Girl Mel C will play Mary Magdalene, while Jason Donovan and Dawn French have been announced as Lloyd Webber's co-judges on the panel of new talent show Superstar.

Lloyd Webber said: "We've got to obviously have a guy with phenomenal charisma, that will be the main thing."
