SALE United’s current crop of under-sixes, pictured, retained the crown that last year’s team won at the Chaddy End Tournament on Sunday. Sixteen teams from Greater Manchester, including two from Sale United, took part in the competition held in Higher Blackley.

Sale’s other team reached the quarter final stage, but the Sale United Aztecs battled through to a tense final against Avro Juniors, the only team not to lose a game the whole day.

In the final, Avro took a lead midway through the first half, but in the second half and after a long day, the Sale boys found that extra bit of strength to secure the equaliser which took it into extra time and then penalties.

As is often the case this added drama to the day and spectators were hooked as some opportunities were missed by players from both sides. Eventually, as it went to ‘sudden death’ penalties, the victorious Sale boys clinched it at 6-5.

Sale coach Jamie Lyth said: “I’m really proud of what both sides have achieved today. I would like to add that every player taking part has been a product of our “Gimme 5s” program for children aged 3 to 5. Their level of skill is really beginning to show at events like this one.”
