Urmston boxers set to make a 'big impression', says coach

Boxing coach Tom Murry says he is excited about the prospect of having two of his fighters competing in the Queensbury Boxing League on June 30.

And he believes his young fighters - both from Trafford - have what it takes to make a major impact in the UK’s premier boxing league.

Launched just over two years ago by former English welterweight champion Ross Minter as a dynamic new boxing platform for British based boxers outside of the established amateur and professional ranks to compete on, the competition has attracted fighters from all over the country.

Former amateur Murry, aged 23, hopes a good performance by his two charges will lead to title opportunities for them later in the year.

Making their debuts at the league’s World’s Collide event will be middleweight James Higgy and super middleweight Dean Whitby, and the Urmston based boxers are keen to see just how they measure up against the league’s current stars.

Murry said: “The boys have had plenty of time to prepare for their bouts and I am really looking forward to seeing them in action, and I’m confident they will both make a big impression on the night.”

Higgy, 22, is one of the club’s most active fighters after competing outside of the league’s ranks for a number of years against some top class competition including former British champion Michael Gomez, and he will need to be at his best when he locks horns with fellow league debutant Danny Shannon. Shannon, from Chatham in Kent, boasts an unblemished record of nine wins coming into the contest. The big hitting Whitby will face former Queensbury title challenger Rossco Parker in a contest that looks set to produce fireworks.

With the show being filmed for British Eurosport and the best of the action from the night being shown sometime in July on the channel, there will be plenty of incentive for both of Murry’s boxers to perform and make it onto the televised event.
