THE Trafford Eagles Christian Golf Society enjoyed a great day at the fabulous St Annes Old Links course for their Captain’s Day.

It proved to be one of the best days in the society’s eight-year history with Captain David Nutsey providing some excellent prizes in a tight competition.

Only two Stableford points separated the top five players and ten-handicapper Gareth Winstanley won with a great haul of 41 points.

Next in with 40 was the Captain closely followed by Alan Clitherow and John Fizgibon, both on 39.

Society secretary Brian Dique recovered well from being struck by stray Ball and he enthused: “This was a perfect day and the perfect venue to hold our prestigious Captain’s Day for a very fitting Captain.

“The competition was fierce and everyone enjoyed the experience and look forward to playing there again.

“The Eagles currently have 40 members including five in single figures and we have an annual increasing membership.”

Flixton ladies were in action in two competitions and in a 15-hole Stableford Eileen Cornish led in with 18 points from Chris Cornish 17.

Chris Cornish stepped up a place in a 15-hole medal with her nett 65 seeing her clear of Irene Braithwaite 70.75.

William Wroe Vets played a singles Stableford over a shortened course and John Maloney led in with 24 points, one more than Barry Broadbent.

In an 18-hole Stableford Jim Healy blasted his way to 40 points to win a cpo from George Smith.

Davyhulme Park’s ladies played a 17-hole medal and it was woin by June Hill with 65.9 from Enid Royle 70, and Carol Dean 70.6.

Park’s men played a bBB Stableford and Roger Murray and Philip Gilmore won a cpo on 40 points from Dave Wood and Joe Graham.

Sale ladies played a Par competition and in a close finish Maria Walmsley won a cpo on +1 from Vincente Gleave with Caroline Glain top of a trio on level per of Pat Hannah and Elizabeth Penney.

Some of the region’s top professionals are in action this coming Sunday at Flixton Golf Club.

It is the finals day of the Manchester Alliance Match Play Championships and in the am semi-finals are David Smith (Marriott Worsley Park) v Scott Jackson (Disley) and Graham Cox (Davenport) v Tom Murray (Didsbury) The winners of the semi-finals play the final in the afternoon and spectators are welcome to attend.

The Alliance are looking for entries in their 36-hole stroke play championship at Withington on Monday April 16, for more details contact secretary Doug Craig on either 0161 748 4827 or 07760 996131.

A full turnout of teams enjoyed great scenery and superb weather for the Manchester Alliance Team of Four competition that had been postponed at Bolton Old Links earlier in the season.

Didsbury’s Europro Tour player Danny Wardrop kept up his consistent form of recent weeks as he took the top individual pro slot with 38 points, one more than David Smith (Marriott Worsley Park)) and home pro Nick Berry.

It was tight in the team event which developed into a local derby with two teams locked on 90 points.

The Bramhall fab four of pro Richard Green, Ian King, Mike Spencer and Darren Whittaker got the nod in the cpo from Bramall Park’s Liam Burgess, John Francis, Andrew New and Sam Lynch.

Completing the prize list in third spot were the home team of Captain Paul Waring, Nick Berry, Ron Clark and Wilshaw Finney with 86 points.
