A WEAKENED Trafford MV returned from Cumbria empty-handed after a 58-5 defeat at Wigton in the North Lancs/Cumbria Division.

A spate of injuries and absentees hit MV hard and within the first quarter of an hour the visitors had been blitzed with Wigton striking regularly and maintaining their 100-per-cent home record.

Richard Moffatt opened the scoring with stand-off Dan Reed converting and further tries went to Steven Harris, Oliver Lewis and Aron Henderson to secure the bonus point at 22-0 with as many minutes gone.

The home side had the option of several big ball carriers and inroads were being made in the MV defence all over the park.

The MV players worked hard to stall the attacks but it proved pointless as further tries came from Moffatt, Jay Henderson, converted, and Mark Deans to reach 39-0 at half time.

MV made changes in the second half and began to manage the game a bit better but the damage had already been done. Second-half tries came for Wigton came from Elliott Armstrong, converted by Reed, and then Lewis before MV's standout player, Stuart Crampton, eventually crossed the line for a consolation score.

As the minutes ticked away Harris crossed for Wigton's 10th and final try.

MV can be proud of the effort put in by the players on the day but strength in depth is an obvious point to work on for next season.

This weekend sees MV's final game of the season at home against second-placed Bolton who have won their last six games.

MV will be nearer full strength and will be looking for a win to close off their season, kick off 3pm.
