TRAFFORD completed a fine double over Glossop on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory in their Manchester Premier Cup first-round tie.

Manager Tom Baker made seven changes to the side that had performed so admirably on Saturday to beat the same opposition 3-2 in Evo-Stik North.

But despite this his side dominated from the start and after just six minutes a neat header by Mark Derbyshire set up Michael Monaghan who miskicked from six yards.

Trafford centre-back Steve Mason put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark when he crashed a great header into the roof of the net following a left-wing corner.

The first half came to a close with Courtney Meppen-Walter cracking a free kick from 20 yards that Trafford keeper Grant Shenton saved at full stretch.

After Trafford’s dominant display in the first half, the second period was a more even affair.

Keil O’Brien saw his back-post drive held by Phillips before Declan Rydings capitalised on a shocking mistake by Meppen-Walter to advance and confidently slip the ball home to make it 2-0.

The game appeared to be over but in the 87th minute the hosts were thrown a lifeline when a free kick from the left was met by a diving header by Kane Hickman and Glossop poured forward in search of an unlikely equaliser.

In the dying seconds Glossop keeper Philips and Michael Monaghan clashed on the halfway line as Trafford attempted a quick breakaway.

Referee Graham appeared to be unsighted and produced a yellow card for each player.

However, as this was Monaghan’s second offence, he was given his marching orders for the second time in three days.

It was a disappointing end to what had been an exciting game dominated by a slick Trafford performance but at least they had won through to a second-round tie against the winners of Abbey Hey and Chadderton's tie.

On home soil on Saturday, Baker's boys moved up to eighth with a home triumph against Glossop.

In atrocious conditions, the hosts made a lightning-fast start with two James Dean goals inside eight minutes.

The first came when Aaron Burns floated in a superb cross from the right that Dean met with a back-post header and a carbon-copy finish two minutes later came courtesy of an Andy Langford cross.

In the 34th minute the visitors pulled a goal back completely against the run of play when Meppen-Walter crossed from the left and diminutive striker Jude Oyibo rose unmarked to head home from six yards.

Baker’s side were made to pay for their misses in the 47th minute when Glossop forced a shock equaliser, Chris Baguley swinging in a deep free kick over from the left that was met by a sweet volley into the bottom corner by Meppen-Walter.

In the 58th minute all seemed lost for Trafford when Monaghan launched himself into a reckless challenge on Matty Russell and received a red card.

But the 10 men rallied and in the 76th minute they secured the points when Dorney swung a corner over from the right and skipper Mason timed his run to perfection to power a glorious header past Phillips at the near post.
