AN exciting Integro League Cup tie came to a disappointing end for Trafford, as Hyde edged through 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Ewen Fields on Tuesday night.

The artificial surface brought the best out of the ball players on show with Trafford’s Jason St Juste and Jack Dorney repeatedly catching the eye.

But it was the hosts who created the first chance when Peter Boyle shot straight at Grant Shenton after cutting in from the left.

Hyde goalkeeper James Hodges then saved from Aaron Burns following a great run and cross by St Juste before Burns himself set off on a mazy run that ended with a shot straight at the home keeper.

The best chance of the game came in the 18th minute when Ally Brown flighted a magnificent cross to the back post but Andy Keogh headed wide at the back post.

Hyde started the second period on the front foot with Lewis Haydock just failing to connect with a wicked low cross by Karl Jones before Hodges was fortunate when his attempted clearance struck Burns and rebounded back into his hands.

Fortune favoured the hosts once again in the 57th minute when a deep cross by St Juste cannoned back into play off the crossbar with Brown firing the rebound wide of the far post.

Dorney wasted a free kick from a good position but it was Hyde who finished the stronger with substitute Tom Pratt causing problems on the right and Shenton producing good saves to deny Sam Summerbee and David Brown.

And so the game went to a penalty shoot-out with Hyde clinically converting all five of their spot-kicks and a miss by Trafford skipper Chris Palmer consigning his side to a 5-4 defeat.

The cup exit came after Trafford had extended their unbeaten league run to four games with Saturday’s superb 4-1 victory at Ossett Albion

Dominating the first half-hour, the visitors led through Scott Sephton’s sweetly-struck volley.

They doubled the lead a few minutes later, Burns scoring from the spot after Michael Monaghan was tripped in the penalty area.

After weathering an Ossett storm in the second half, Steve Mason scored Trafford’s third, glancing in Louis Corrigan’s free kick.

A push by James Dean allowed Andy Welsh to score a consolation for Albion, but Monaghan completed the scoring three minutes from time.
