BROOKLANDS MU men's first team bounced back from an opening-day defeat to beat a talented East Grinstead side 4-3 on home soil in the Men's Hockey League Premier Division.

With England Under-18s' star Tom Russell recalled, the game started at a frantic pace with the visitors providing most of the pressure.

And it told when they went ahead when a speculative shot beat a diving Chris Scott.

It was 2-0 when, from a short corner, a straight drag flick wrong-footed the Brooklands keeper.

The hosts then took the game by the scruff of the neck and good play between the ever-reliable Oliver Clarke and David Flanagan forced a short corner.

It came to nothing but from another corner soon after, captain Peter Flanagan stepped up to fire home and get Brooklands back in the game.

Chances started to open up for Brooklands and GB U23s star James Sutcliffe breezed past two defenders, drew the keeper off his line and gave a back-hand pass to the perfectly-positioned David Flanagan to flick the ball into a gaping net.

Brooklands stepped up another gear as the second half started and they completed the turnaround when Russell provided a pinpoint cross into the D which was turned in by David Flanagan.

But they were pegged back within a minute when East Grinstead broke quickly to level the scores again.

Brooklands responded in kind and Richard Slater produced some excellent stick skills to create a chance that fell to Andrew Jackson and he hammered home on the half volley to seal victory ahead of a long trip to Canterbury on Sunday.
