RADIO legend Mike Sweeney has put together a team of celebrity friends to take part in a charity football match in celebration of his 70th birthday.

All proceeds from the match will help raise vital funds for the North West Air Ambulance Charity.

The match, taking place on Sunday, October 8 (kick off 2pm) at Trafford Football Club, will see a line-up of stars from the small screen and pitch don their boots for the cause, including United legend Paul Scholes, player/manager Peter Reid and an array of stars from TV soaps, including Chris Bisson, Adam Thomas and Andy Whyment.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham will also take part.

BBC Radio Manchester presenter Mike Sweeney, said: “What better to keep you feeling young than organising a kick about with friends?

"Football is a fantastic way to bring people together, especially for an important cause like the North West Air Ambulance Charity.

"I’m looking forward to Sunday, it promises to be a great party atmosphere for the whole family – I just hope the rest of the team can keep up with me!”

Spectators will have the chance to win two pairs of free flights to anywhere in Europe at half time, courtesy of official sponsors of the All Stars team, Jet2.

Jenny Haskey, head of fundraising at the North West Air Ambulance Charity, said: “It’s wonderful to see such a star-studded lineup come out to help keep our lifesaving charity in the skies.

"We’re extremely grateful for the support we receive from people across the North West and hope everyone enjoys the game on Sunday.

"We’ve got two crew members joining the All Stars team who I know are hoping to get the match off to a flying start with a goal or two!”

All money raised from ticket sales and the half time raffle will go towards keeping the North West Air Ambulance Charity in the air. Last year alone, the charity flew over 2,000 rescue missions throughout the region and the service relies on public donations to keep its helicopters operational.

Gates open at 1pm on Sunday at Trafford Football Club. Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for pensioners and £1 for children.

Trafford Football Club is on Pennybridge Lane, Urmston, Manchester, M41 5DL.
