URMSTON Hockey Club’s men’s veterans won 5-0 as they hosted Sale Veterans.

Goals from Martin Burgess, Steve Coupe, Andy Shenton and Rick Needham sealed the win in the veterans’ first game of the season.

Owen Monk’s goals secured the only win in the senior section this weekend as the men’s seconds beat a resilient St Helen’s side 1-0.

Man-of-the-match Aaron Kelly impressed on his return as part of a disciplined team performance.

Elsewhere, Isobel Thornley’s strike set up a frantic finish for the ladies’ firsts but they were edged out 3-2 by Triton firsts.

Rachel Kelly opened the team’s league account with a sublime first-time strike but Triton were saved by the bell as Urmston could not find the equaliser after Thornley’s late goal.

Brooklands thirds sealed a 3-1 win against the men’s firsts with two late counter attacks after Andy Power had levelled from a penalty corner.

Man-of-the-match James McLaughlin kept the Brooklands strikers at bay from a string of penalty corners but the visitors closed out the game clinically to leave with all three points.

Meanwhile, the ladies’ seconds were beaten 2-1 by Glossop ladies’ firsts despite being only able to field 11 players.

The ladies’ thirds went down 5-0 to a strong Manchester Moss Park side having held the home side to 1-0 until half time.

A second-half flurry sealed Moss Park’s win with Jen Power soldiering on despite dislocating and fracturing her thumb.
