HELSBY Golf Club provided an excellent and challenging course for the Cheshire Junior Boys Championships.

Close competitions in all of the prize categories on offer and some new young talent made a big impression on the Cheshire officials.

Winning the Championship trophy was Jake Hibbert, of Delamere Forest Golf Club, after winning a card play-off on 71 from club colleague Sam Long, with another Delamere star, Oscar Doran, a shot off their pace.

It also needed a card play-off in the competition for the best nett return, with Daniel Beck (Styal GC) taking top spot with his 69 edging out Long.

The under-14 section uncovered a new star in Frank Kennedy, of Prestbury GC, as the 11-year-old seven handicapper won a card play-off on 78 from Charlie Ashbrook (Brookfield GC), two more than Jack McKie (Carden Park).

Taking the top u14 nett prize was Aaron Lavelle, of Ringway GC, with his 92-22=70 return.

Cheshire president Sean Ritchie thanked Helsby Golf Club for their excellent support on and off the course, the players and their parents for their efforts and the Cheshire officials for their work behind the scenes to make it a golfing day to remember.

Meanwhile, on finals day in the Manchester Alliance Inter Club Knock Out for the Dunham Forest Trophy, Manchester Golf Club beat Bolton Old Links in the final.

The competition sees the club professional and the top six amateurs representing their clubs in an event which had nearly 100 entries.

The Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes has also reached the semi-final stage and sees Tytherington v Brookdale and Shaw Hill v Breightmet with the final at Sale on Sunday.

The seniors’ semi-finals feature Ashton-under-Lyne v Fairfield and Chorley v Shaw Hill with Manchester again hosting the final tomorrow.
