CHESHIRE, England and UK golfing legend Joanne Morley will again be hosting her annual junior challenge at her home club Sale on Sunday October 22.

Morley won virtually all of the titles on offer as an amateur, including playing in a Curtis Cup win at Royal Liverpool, before joining the professional ranks with a handicap of +6.

She went on to play in the Solheim Cup and had regular success on the LET and LPGA Tours and on retirement from playing was the Solheim Cup vice-captain for four years, culminating in a memorable win for GB and Ireland over the USA.

She has been a staunch supporter of junior golf in Cheshire over the years and has joined with WGTB Golf in promoting the Joanne Morley Junior Golf Challenge, which has seen many of the players go on to achieve great success in golf over the years.

For most of the past 20 years Morley has teamed up with WGTB Golf, who support the Golf Foundation, to promote the challenge for boys and girls under 16 years of age on January 1.

Top players such as David Horsey, Bronte Law, Haydn McCullen and Gemma Clews, and recent England players Louisa Brunt and Bel Wardle (the current English Girls' champion) have enjoyed playing in the competition.

The Manchester and District Alliance’s winter season began last week at Marple with an event sponsored by Paul Dalby of the Manchester Trophy Market and the first half of the season of weekly competitions finishes on November 22 at Mottram Hall with an event sponsored by Lewis Nunn of Ground Level.

The Alliance summer inter-club knockouts will also be decided with various finals in September and October.

The Alliance is the biggest of its kind in the country with more than 110 clubs whose members are eligible to play in the competitions.

There is a professional Order of Merit (holder Phil Archer of Birchwood GC) and an amateur OoM (holder Vinny Doyle of Leigh GC) and the Alliance always aims to follow its motto of ‘Friendship through Golf’.
