URMSTON Ladies' seconds progressed to the final of the Greater Manchester Women's Hockey League Divisions Three and Four Cup after beating league leaders Rochdale Ladies’ firsts 2-1.

Captain Moe Rothwell and Izzy Povah netted to send the Greens through with Carolynn Barratt, Caz Butcher and Becky Shepherd solid in defence.

In the league, their emphatic 6-1 win against Manchester Moss Park Ladies’ thirds saw them move back into second place with Rothwell and Charlotte O’Toole netting braces and Danielle Harvey also firing home.

Bronwen O’Toole and goalscorer Faye Wilson terrorised the opposition from start to finish and they will be hoping for more of the same when they play fellow promotion hopefuls University of Manchester Ladies’ thirds in the cup final on March 18.

Man-of-the-match Luke Taylor was at the heart of a solid defensive display for the men’s firsts as they beat Lymm Men’s firsts 4-0 over the weekend.

Steve Brittle’s opener was all that separated the sides going into the last 15 minutes before goals from Stefan Wasilewski, Luke Fidler, and Jonathon Downes sealed the win.

The result keeps Urmston top of Division One with one eye on this weekend’s clash between fellow challengers Liverpool  Sefton firsts and Knutsford firsts.

Dan Downes netted twice in a commanding man-of-the-match display as the men’s seconds drew 2-2 with Prescot Men’s seconds in Division Five North South.

Facing a team very different to the opposition who the Greens beat 14-1 earlier in the season, Urmston battled back from two goals down but were left to rue missed opportunities as they shared the points.

Meanwhile, the ladies’ firsts got back to winning ways as they beat basement club Bowdon Ladies’ thirds to seal at least a top-nine finish in Division Two South West.
