BOXING legend Joe Calzaghe is heading to Altrincham to regale sports fans with tales from his incredible career – and young Trafford boxers will benefit as a result.

The former world champion – who retired undefeated following wins over stellar names such as Chris Eubank, Roy Jones Junior, Bernard Hopkins and Jeff Lacy – is guest of honour at the Cresta Court Hotel on Friday, May 5.

Joe made history as the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in boxing history, having held the WBO title for more than 10 years.

A former winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, he was inducted into the Boxing Hall of fame in 2014. Joe said: “I have very fond memories of competing in Manchester, so I’m really looking forward to spending time back in the area. Beating Jeff Lacy in the city, in a huge unification fight, was said by many to be my best ever performance. He was favourite, but I won every round!

“Boxing’s always been so huge in the North West and I’m delighted that funds raised on the night will help local amateur kids to keep following their sporting dreams.”

Events in the City is working with Altrincham-based the Sport Community – a charity that helps businesses invest in sport. Boxing club, Timperley ABC, will receive a much-needed boost from funds raised from ‘An Evening with Joe Calzaghe.’
