TOM Booth has been a keen and very active member of Northenden Golf Juniors for the past 10 years and he finished his junior career at the club on a real high.

The former student at St Ambrose College in Hale has worked hard at his game and prior to playing in the final junior 'major’ of the season for the coveted Beecher Trophy, he had got his handicap down to a very respectable 11.

In the Beecher Trophy the undoubted highlight of his round was to score the second ace of his golfing life on the difficult 200-yard par three.

Booth said: "Playing in wind and rain I used a three-wood and aimed to the left side of the green to fade the ball into the pin which was back right.

“The shot went as planned at a slightly lower ball flight than intended and landed just short of the green and then ran onto the green but out of sight from the tee.

“My playing partner Joe Wood (the junior captain) and I went to look behind the green for the ball and we eventually found it in the hole.

“The ace helped me to a winning score of net 77 to take the Beecher Trophy on a back nine-hole count-back.

“My other scores since then in competitions have seen my handicap drop from 11 to nine.

“My previous ace was the 11th hole at Portmadoc where I play occasionally as I am also a member at Royal St David’s Golf Club.

“Having finished my studies at St Ambrose I am now going to Lancaster University to study Maths, Economics and History and hopefully I will be able to play on their golf team.

“For my progress in golf I would like to thank my dad and Joe Manion who have both given me great inputs and guidance to my game.”
