BROOKLANDS MU travelled to Cannock for an English Hockey Cup tie and progressed thanks to a 5-1 win.

Without head coach Mark Bateman or team manager Paul Gannon, both away on international duty, the team was led superbly by veteran Peter Flanagan.

They started well and their quality was too much for Cannock in the first 10 minutes.

A brilliant passing move around the back set up striker Sam Perrin for a deflection in at the back post.

Brooklands continued to pepper the goal with several opportunities going agonisingly close – Tom Lush, Matt Brougham and David Flanagan amongst those getting strikes on target.

The young Cannock side responded and keeper Chris Scott made several saves from penalty corners.

And Brooklands soon doubled their lead when Ollie Clarke set up Benedict van Woerkom – a quick free hit leaving him with a free backhand shot.

The good team play continued, with Stefan Ray-Hills and Matthew Symonds setting the platform in the midfield.

Pressure was building with a number of attacking penalty corners for Brooklands and Van Woerkom netted his second off a rebound to make it 3-0 at half time.

In the second half the game lost a bit of its structure, with several cards shown.

In-form David Flanagan then saw a goal chalked off but it did not take long for the fourth to arrive.

Playing a man down, Cannock struggled and a turnover led to some fine one-two passes that ended with Van Woerkom's third.

Scott then dived low to his right to deny a Cannock player from the penalty spot.

A Peter Flanagan drag-flick into the bottom left from another penalty corner made it 5-0 before a late consolation for the hosts.

Brooklands' men are back in action on Sunday when they host Canterbury (2pm).
