THE 2016 Greater Manchester Sports Awards, sponsored by Visionary Sports Investment, will take place at The Point, Emirates, Old Trafford, on November 4.

The awards will see the local winners from across all 10 local authorities come together with a chance of becoming Greater Manchester winner. Olympic and Paralympic Medallists Nicola White, Kadeena Cox, Claire Cashmore, Callum Skinner and Bianca Walkden will be special guests on the night and share their experiences and inspirational stories whilst congratulating the local finalists and winners on their ongoing achievements.

It is such a rewarding evening, celebrating the achievements and sporting successes of Greater Manchester residents, highlighting the very best of community sport and celebrating the fantastic people behind the scenes.

THE nominees representing Trafford are:

Coach of the year sponsored by Why Sports – Vince Cara. Vince is a lacrosse coach at Brooklands Lacrosse club, on the talent pathway and at national level. He strives to improve himself as a coach, constantly seeking out new methods of delivery and learning from other coaches. He fully supports all his players whether in the team environment or on an individual basis and has great rapport with them. He gives constant feedback and is always available for them.

Club of the year sponsored by Rapport: the people activation agency – AFC Urmston Meadowside AFC Urmston Meadowside is the 2016 North West England FA Charter Standard Club of the Year. With over 100 coaches and a membership of over 700 the club is one of the largest in the country. It is run entirely by volunteers and boasts 59 teams. The club is heavily involved in the development of its players, coaches and volunteers as well as furthering the sport within the local community.

Volunteer of the year sponsored by Manchester Metropolitan University – Chris Ryan. As chairman Chris is the cornerstone of Urmston Tennis Club. He can always to be found at the club, playing tennis and being a big part of the welcome sessions. He encourages people to get involved in not only playing but taking responsibility for promoting the club and encouraging new people to come and take up tennis or rediscover the sport. He is the driving force of the clubs success.

Unsung hero of the year sponsored by manchester united foundation– Shelagh Everrett. Shelagh has undertaken a vast number of roles at Timperley Hockey Club. She never takes her foot off the pedal or loses sight of how to get results or how all the pieces fit together. She is well respected and liked by all, going above and beyond what is expected of anyone. She sacrifices so much of her time to the club that no words can express how grateful they are.

Sports achiever of the year sponsored by Total Gymnastics Academies – Douglas Tewnion. Dougie is a quiet and unassuming individual who works hard to reach his goals. This year he represented Scotland in the Lacrosse World Championships in Vancouver and the fact that he was selected for both the U19 and senior teams and maintains a place in the Brooklands first team is testament to the work he has put in and his commitment to be the best he can be.

Disabled sports achiever of the year sponsored by Mills & Reeves – Carly Tait. Four years ago Carly attended the Paralympics in London as a spectator and left feeling inspired by those that were racing in what is now her event. Carly had never been involved in sport before but was keen to give it a try. Four years later she is competing on the same stage as those she watched in London and this year joined the GB Paralympic team in Rio.

Changing lifestyle recognition award sponsored by Worksmart VPA – Charley Evans Everything about Charley is inspiring, the shy reserved girl that always had her head down and wore a hoody has blossomed into a confident non hoody wearing butterfly. Through working with the leaders of the Balance programme she’s made positive changes to her lifestyle and is reaping the benefits. She has even inspired her family to undertake the journey with her and the supportive unit that has been created through Charley’s commitment is amazing.
