FAIRFIELD Golf Club was able to show off its redesigned course and splendid new clubhouse to full effect as it hosted the first competition in the Manchester Alliance Winter season.

The day was blessed by superb weather and an excellent course to give an excellent debut to the Alliance’s new captain Dave Smith (Swinton Park GC professional).

Jamie Howarth has played for several years on the European Challenge Tour and the Europro Tour and is now the assistant professional at Davenport GC and he showed his class with a great double.

He romped to victory in the individual professional section posting a seven-under-par 43 points to lead in from Craig Corrigan (Chilli Dip) 41 and Scott Jackson (Disley) 37.

The top assistant pro, not in the top three, was Ashton on Mersey’s Ollie Smith with 30 points.

Howarth made it a double as he partnered Werneth Low’s Kevan Tipper, father of Low professional Jamie Tipper, to 46 points to win the pro-am section from Corrigan and Phil Conner (Wigan) 45 and Bob Batchelor (Stand) and Jordan Whitehouse (Blackley) 41.

Local knowledge paid off in the am-am section with Fairfield stalwarts Tim Walker and Sean Simpson first past the post with 43 points ahead of club colleagues Gary McHugh and Steve Roche 42 and Vinny Doyle (Leigh) and Darron Tickle (Blackley) 41.

As Walker and Simpson were the top scorers from the same club they won the coveted Robert Wax Cup.
