ASHTON on Mersey’s Gemma Clews has enjoyed great success in the past two years representing England and the 21-year-old has again been picked to play for the national side in the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico.

Clews currently leads the England Golf Order of Merit, having tied fourth in the English Women’s Amateur and sixth in the English stroke play.

She also reached the last 16 in the British Women’s Championships and was a member of the England winning team in the home internationals.

Cheshire Seniors have won international call-ups for both the men’s and ladies' teams for their forthcoming matches.

Cheshire UGC president Roy Smethurst (Crewe) will captain the England team as they play in the European Championships in Slovenia followed by the home internationals at Machynys Peninsula, Wales.

Winning his first international cap will be Northenden’s Dave Nelson, who was the Cheshire Seniors' champion in 2015 and this season was third in the English Seniors' Championships, runner-up in the northern senior qualifying tournament and 14th in the Senior Amateur Championship.

The left-hander hails from Chicago but became a UK citizen a few years ago and has been a key player at senior level for several years for Cheshire.

Sale’s Cath Rawthore has been an ever-present in the England team for a couple of years after joining the senior ranks and she has been selected to play in the European Championships in Poland, while her county colleague Caroline Berry (Bromborough) has been chosen as reserve.

The annual Joanne Morley Junior Challenge will be staged at Sale Golf Club on Sunday, October 23.

The current champion is Luke Donnelly of Ringway Golf Club and the competition is open to boys and girls in the region aged under 16 years on January 1, 2016.
