A TALENTED swimmer will be flying the flag for Trafford at the Rio Olympics.

The 16-day extravaganza gets underway with the opening ceremony tomorrow and gunning for glory will be swimmer James Guy,

Guy started out on the path to swimming glory at Swim Trafford in Altrincham, aged five.

Guy, 20, specialises in the 200- and 400-metre freestyle.

He is heavily fancied for gold, having won the 200m freestyle and 4x200m at the world championships in Kazan, Russia, last year, as well as silver in the 400m.

He will be in action in the men's 400m freestyle race on Saturday, followed by the men's 200m freestyle race on Sunday.

He will also take part in the men's 100m butterfly race next Thursday.

The Radcliffe-born swimmer said:"I'm so proud to be part of Team GB. Thank you to everyone for their support."

Guy, , who lives in Trafford, won a scholarship to Millfield aged 13.

Swim Trafford continues to provide opportunities to all swimmers from around the borough of Trafford and beyond.

Its swimmers compete at all levels from county through to international representation. All the swimmers are a member of one of our four borough development clubs (Altrincham Swimming Club, Flixton Swimming Club, Trafford Metro and Stretford Amateur Swimming Club). Together they make up the Swim 21 Trafford Aquatic Network.
