SALE Harriers running club member Mike Dunne beat more than 200 racers aged 65-69 to come fourth in his age category in the Great Manchester Run recently.

Finishing in an impressive 45mins 45secs, Dunne’s achievement was even more special as he underwent major heart surgery just three years ago.

He took part in the 10km race around Manchester, which attracted 35,000 competitors this year, to support The Silver Line charity – the only national, free, confidential 24/7 helpline for lonely and isolated older people.

The 67-year-old said: “Just over three years ago I had heart problems and ended up with 10 stents around my coronary arteries. I didn’t think I would run again.

“I was pleased to get such a good time – while doing something to help The Silver Line.

"My wife is a mobile hairdresser and she would tell me stories about the lonely older people she would visit.

"For some of them she was the only person they would see all week.

"I had heard of The Silver Line and thought now is my time to help with this problem of loneliness.”

The Wythenshawe runner has raised £50 so far – which will pay for 10 calls to the helpline from lonely and isolated older people at times when other services are closed.

Iain Whittaker, community and challenge events fundraiser at The Silver Line, said: “Well done Michael for such a fantastic achievement.

"We are delighted he chose to run for The Silver Line – raising both funds and awareness of what we do.

“Running the helpline is our biggest cost and supporters like Mike are helping to make sure we’re always there for older people when they need us, night or day.”

The Silver Line has challenge events taking place across the UK throughout the year for every level of fitness and age. From walking and running to abseils and skydives, you can get details from our fundraising team via our website.
