ASHTON on Mersey Ladies cricket team are the big hitters of the season so far.

During a rain break recently they filmed themselves doing a changing room version of football’s “bin header” challenge.

After posting via Ashton’s social media outlets, this film had over 47,000 views at the Cricket News Facebook alone, as well as being posted on the Messenger online edition.

The ladies inaugural season at Ashton has been boosted by a new kit sponsorship deal with Woodland Global, the freight business based at Manchester Airport.

On the field it has been a tough start to the 2016 campaign but Captain Amanda Gettins is hopeful for the future.

Amanda said “We are at a new ground with superb training facilities and refurbished clubhouse, yet it takes time for everything to gel". Ladies organiser, Carol Ingham, a well-known personality on the female cricket circuit, says new recruits are actively encouraged.

“There are opportunities for girls and ladies of any age to learn, develop and play cricket, both socially and competitively”.

One individual who has grasped the opportunity is club junior cricketer and Altrincham Grammar School pupil, Hannah Maybury, who has been selected for Cheshire U15 girls. Hannah contributes to Ashton’s Junior mixed and girls teams, as well as getting opportunity to play in the full ladies team. Hannah has also assisted the primary school new starter programme at Ashton, which is part of the club’s commitment to create a friendly, community based environment in which young players can flourish.
