SALE Sharks started their warm-up game to the new season with a 36-22 victory against Newcastle Falcons in the Kings of the North competition.

The six-try triumph for Steve Diamond's side included a brace of tries by winger Nev Edwards, and further efforts by John O'Donnell, Mark Jennings, Tim Jeffers and Mark Easter, while Joe Ford kicked four points with the boot and Nick McLeod added one conversion to round off the scoring.

Coach Diamond said: "It was good to get a run out, and to see the fruits of the labours of pre-season coming into fruition was very pleasing.

"Overall there was a lot of pleasing things, and a lot of things which we still need to work on.

In the match, Diamond decided to give a number of youngsters a start and he said he was very happy with them: "Over the next few games, we want to give a chance to all the side including the young players.

"That's the way we do it here, if they get the opportunity and they take it, it's all well and good. You just have to look at Mike Haley, Josh Beaumont, Tommy Taylor and Ross Harrison – they've all been given the chance and they've taken it."

On Saturday, Sale take on Leicester at the AJ Bell Stadium and Diamond is excited about the home tie.

"I have spoken to both coaches about the tournament and we are going to be putting strong teams out rather than development sides.

"We know how physical the league is and we have to make sure we are fit for the season with not many injuries.

"We are 100 per cent at the moment, and want to maintain that record."
