TRAFFORD suffered Bank Holiday blues as they conceded two goals in the final seven minutes to go down to Evo-Stik Division One North promotion favourites Warrington Town 2-1.

The visitors were on top in the early stages with Steven Gillespie curling a shot just over and Scott Metcalfe drilling a free kick wide of the upright.

Defences dominated and there was little creative football as both teams relied on long balls out of defence, by-passing the midfield.

Metcalfe curled another effort just wide after cutting in from the left and Gillespie’s weak header was easily collected by home goalkeeper Luke Pilling as Town looked the more dangerous outfit.

However, three minutes before the interval Jack Dorney should have done better when he broke clear down the centre but lost control of the ball and the danger was cleared.

The pattern of play continued in the second half with both teams cancelling each other out with totally committed, defence dominated displays with no quarter given.

And it came as somewhat of a shock in the 69th minute when ex-Trafford winger Scott Metcalfe clumsily tripped Mark Haslam, allowing Chris McDonagh to drive the resultant penalty under Karl Wills to put Trafford ahead.

What would have been a superb victory was now in sight but the visitors were showing great fighting spirit and won a succession of corners.

With just seven minutes remaining Scott Metcalfe brought the large contingent of travelling supporters to their feet when he swung over a wickedly in-swinging corner from the right that flew over keeper Pilling and into the opposite top corner.

Three minutes later Town once again demonstrated their threat from set pieces with another corner that was drilled into the near post where James McCarten arrived to glance the ball past the helpless Pilling.

Trafford were unable to snatch the equaliser and so fell to a devastating 2-1 defeat coming just two days after their elimination from the FA Cup.

Lee Cropper opened the scoring for Witton and it remained like that until half-time despite Tom Baker's side thinking they should have been given a penalty when Chris McDonagh was pushed over in the box.

Two minutes after the interval, Witton extended their lead when Chris Baker's header went into the top corner.

There were still chances for Ben Deegan (twice) before Trafford were handed a life-line when Deegan slotted home with three minutes left.

But despite the late pressure, Albion's defence stood first and the final whistle signalled victory for the visitors
