ALDERMERE FC are celebrating after winning first league title for 36 years.

Formed in 1906, Aldermere are the longest-serving member of the Lancashire and Cheshire Football League.

The club are based at the Coach House Flixton Fields and beat their close rivals Salford Victoria after winning the last eight games on the trot.

Manager Shay Casey, who has been part of the club for nearly 30 years and was delighted about the achievement.

Their success was even greater as they finished mid-table last season and Casey took on the role in December 2013 when they struggled to field a team.

He said: "The key to our success was that we put together a tight-knit squad based on youth and experience.

"Having taken over the team the previous season when we were near the bottom we won six out of the last eight games and regrouped with youth and one or two older additions.

"Winning the league was definitely the highlight and the fact we led the table almost all season.

"We are also starting a reserve team in the Lancashire and Cheshire League next season and looking to attract local youth players to join the club."
