The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon in Trafford took place at the weekend and saw the largest number of finishers in the race’s 39-year history.

8053 runners including a large British elite field crossed the finish line on Sir Matt Busby Way at Old Trafford Football Stadium, cheered on by thousands of spectators and lots of supporting communities along the route.

International runners had travelled from as far as China, Japan, USA, Canada and Australia to race in Greater Manchester.

Paul Martelletti claimed the winning title in a time of 02:17:47, nearly one minute ahead of runner-up Eoin Callaghan. Michael Kallenberg secured third place in a time of 02:19:00. The top four men ran sub 02:20 which highlights the fact that the course is flat and fast.

The women’s race was dominated by Georgie Bruinvels, who was competing in her first ever marathon.

With a half marathon PB of 74:27:00 she had been a strong contender, and her outstanding performance saw her claim the women’s title in a time of 02:37:21. Bruinvels also shaved more than a minute off the course record, set by club mate Emily Wicks in 2014. Samantha Amend, who came third last year, took 2nd place after crossing the finish line in 02:44:21, ahead of Gemma Connolly who finished in 02:27:18.
